The way the camera moves in that movie had me absolutely hooked, and I don't agree that the performances were too hammy. It's a movie which on the surface seems like a simple, pleasant romp through NYC, but which I realized has a whole lot to say about how women are treated by men (especially artists), and it's able to do so in a gorgeous way that doesn't feel hamfisted or like it's a lecture. And as much as I love Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in Cafe Society, the performances from Chalamet and Fanning stuck with me more. Chalamet does a perfect impression of the "Woody Allen" type. But I found myself coming back to it for the aesthetic and pleasantness of it all, and that's when I felt it's actually great. When I first saw Rainy Day, my thought was that it was like watching someone try their hand at making a Woody Allen movie.

(Just adding a disclaimer that you are absolutely entitled to your opinion, which seems fair, but having the complete opposite opinion, it only seems reasonable to write it out here) It was one of the worst movies I've seen in years.Įdit: deleted my original last paragraph because I’m more interested in his movies than his guilt or innocence. James Belushi and Kate Winslet were unbelievably hammy. Allen got much better performances out of Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart than he did out of Chalamet and Fanning.Īnd Wonder Wheel made me actually angry at how bad it was. In other recent Allen movies (last 5 years), I really liked Cafe Society. film, as he is now radioactive (at least in the U.S., Europe may be an option for him). Its unfortunate that such a minor work will probably be Allen's last U.S. I knew who she was but had never seen her in anything (probably a generation thing, I'm in my 50's). On the other hand, I had no idea that Selena Gomez was so sharp and funny. As in most Woody Allen films, you're not going to get a subtle, natural performance.

Two extremely watchable leads (Timothee Chalamet and Elle Fanning) were made very unlikable by the script and direction. Rainy Day is a minor work - not very good but easy to watch, nicely photographed and making very good use of NYC atmosphere. I really try to separate my opinion on the artist from my opinion on the artist's work, though of course it's impossible to do so 100% of the time.
